SAX-D Area Alarm

Medical Gas Pipeline Area Alarm System

Features

The SAX-D Area Alarm is a digitally controlled medical gas monitoring system designed to provide clear, high-visibility monitoring of up to six independent piped medical gases downstream of the final AVSU.

  • Monitors up to 6 gases using 4–20mA pressure or vacuum transducers
  • Individual 1.7” OLED display per gas
  • High- and low-pressure alarm indication
  • Pressure Drop early warning indication
  • System fault monitoring (data, wiring and mains failure)
  • Fail-safe common fault relay output
  • Temporary mute with 15-minute auto re-sound
  • Engineer lockout facility for maintenance periods
  • Bluetooth configuration interface (engineer use only)
  • Modbus and SAX Bus interface capability
  • Fully HTM 02-01 compliant

The SAX-D combines modern digital monitoring with proven medical gas alarm principles, offering enhanced clarity and system integration while maintaining compatibility with existing infrastructure.

Application

The SAX-D Area Alarm is used to monitor medical gas pipeline pressures within wards, theatres and clinical areas.

Transducers are installed downstream of the final AVSU and monitor:

  • High pressure
  • Low pressure
  • Vacuum (low pressure only)

Each gas is displayed on its own OLED screen, providing clear colour-coded status indication:

  • Green – Normal
  • Yellow – Pressure Drop
  • Red – High or Low Pressure

The system continuously monitors:

  • Transducer wiring integrity
  • Data communication between Encoder and Displays
  • Mains power condition

A fault will result in:

  • A system fault alarm
  • Visual indication on the affected channel(s)
  • Audible alarm activation

Connection

The SAX-D system comprises an Encoder (Transmitter) and one or more Display units.

The Encoder converts 4–20mA transducer signals and transmits multiplexed data to the Display units via screened cable.

A 4-core cable is run from the Encoder to the Display, comprising:

  • Positive supply
  • Negative supply
  • Data A
  • Data B

Separate 2-core cables are run from each pressure or vacuum transducer to the Encoder.

Optional connections include:

  • Common Fault Relay output
  • SAX Bus interface to existing SAX-6 alarms
  • Modbus RS485 interface

All cable screens must be earthed at BOTH ends.

Installation Requirements

Installation must be carried out by competent personnel in accordance with HTM 02-01 and local regulations.

Electrical Supply

  • 230V AC supply
  • Fused at 3 amps
  • Fed from the essential (emergency) supply

Signal Cabling

  • 4-core screened cable between Encoder and Display
  • 2-core cable per transducer input
  • Maximum 100 metres between Encoder and Displays

Optional Equipment

  • SAX-6 (3 or 6 Gas) adaptor mounting plates
  • SA-6 (3 or 6 Gas) retrofit fascia plates
